Student Support
| Established by the late Mr. A. Gordon Adams, MSU alumnus, this scholarship supports a student interested in pursuing primary care or family practice as a specialty following graduation and a demonstrable interest in serving the greater good. Special consideration will be given to students who have demonstrated unmet financial need |
| Alexander Family Expendable Scholarship Established by Dr. Beth Alexander, professor of Family Practice, this scholarship encourages students to embrace a rich tradition of community involvement and service as they practice medicine. Preference is given to students who demonstrate a commitment to high standards of scholarship (clerkship honors, Alpha Omega Alpha membership, and/or participation in scholarly publication, research, or involvement in curriculum development) and a longstanding pattern of volunteer service in the community. |
| Almany Family Scholarship Fund This expendable scholarship funded by Steve Almany, CHM ’84, and Amy Jo Almany, MSU ’82, supports a student who attended MSU as an undergraduate, excelled at sports at either high school or college, and who is involved in volunteer activites. |
| Brazee Family Endowed Scholarship Fund This scholarship, established by Jason Brazee, CHM ’77, supports students with financial need who intend to practice medicine in Michigan. |
Alice Dunne Chambliss Endowed Scholarship Established by Linda Chambliss, CHM ’80, in honor of her mother’s 80th birthday, this scholarship supports women who have entered medical school while still raising children. This renewable scholarship is first and foremost intended to alleviate the tremendous financial burden placed on these students. |
| CHM Alumni Endowed Scholarship for Outstanding Commitment to Humanistic Medicine This is a pooled scholarship designed to support a fourth-year student who exemplifies a commitment to an integrated humanistic medical education program with equal emphasis on the biologic, behavioral, and social sciences. |
CHM Competitive Endowed Scholarship This is a pooled fund designed specifically to attract academically promising students to MSU-CHM. Its function is to recruit first-year students. |
CHM Faculty/Staff Scholarship (Expendable ) Established by members of the CHM faculty and staff who decided that by pooling their resources and designating their gift for one common cause, they could make a difference. This scholarship is designed for third- or fourth-year students who are Michigan residents. Preference will be given to students who intend to enter primary care and plan to practice in Michigan, with special consideration given to those who intend to practice in a rural or inner city, underserved area. |
CHM Health Professions Open Competitive Scholarship Established through proceeds raised at the annual CHM golf outing, this fund recognizes students for literary and scholarly attainments and leadership skills. It is intended as a recruitment tool for entering students. |
CHM Hispanic Alumni Endowed Scholarship Financed totally by gifts from CHM alumni, this pooled fund was initially established by Ernest Ribera and Alonso Collar, CHM '79 classmates. It is designed to assist Hispanic students enrolled in the college and in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. |
CHM International Health Fund This expendable fund supports student travel for international health experiences. |
CHM Surgical Alumni Endowed Scholarship Established by Anthony Senagore, CHM '82, and James Surrell, CHM '80, both colorectal surgeons, this fund provides financial assistance to students who have shown an interest in pursuing surgery as a preferred specialty following graduation and have a demonstrable interest in serving the greater good. |
Bruce H. Drukker, M.D., Endowed Award of Excellence in Obstetrics & Gynecology Established to honor the retiring chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology. This award is designated for fourth-year CHM students who have chosen and been accepted into an obstetrics and gynecology residency program, who have excelled academically, and who demonstrate the highest ethical and moral professional standards. |
Flint Area Medical Education Staff Scholarship Award (Expendable) Funded by the staff of CHM's Flint community campus, this scholarship is designed for third- or fourth-year students who are assigned to the Flint campus and/or who are residents of Genesee, Lapeer or Shiawassee counties. Special consideration is given to students who have participated in Flint's pre-med program. |
| Joseph Folding CHM Endowed Scholarship Established by late Frances Folding to honor her husband, the Folding scholarship supports a student who demonstrated above-average academic achievement before entering medical school. |
| Arthur L. Foley, II, M.D./Ph.D., Endowed Memorial Scholarship Established by Mrs. Edith Foley, family, and friends in memory of Arthur Lee Foley, II, M.D./Ph.D., professor emeritus of Anatomy. Student recipients must demonstrate a commitment to preventive and academic medicine. Special consideration is given to students who either serve as a mentor or who have benefited from a mentor relationship as they pursued their medical studies. |
| Gertrude and Sigman Gendein Memorial Endowed Scholarship AR0006 This fund is intended for students who display sound academic achievement. Preference is given to students who have graduated from a high school or college located within Oakland County, Michigan. |
| Loren O. Gettel Scholars Program in Rural Health Established in memory of MSU alumnus Loren Gettel, this fund supports attendance at conferences for students interested in pursuing a career in rural health. |
| Doris J. Giddey Scholarship Fund This four-year scholarship is established for students who are Michigan residents and who show academic promise, financial need, and the promise of making a professional contribution to their field of study. It supports student in CHM as well as CANR, CVM, and COM. |
| Theodore Goode Endowed Competitive Scholarship Established by Merton Goode, CHM ’75, this scholarship for entering students is awarded to those who have demonstrated literary and scholastic attainments, a fondness for athletic competition, an understanding of the need to make a contribution to the greater good, and moral force of character and instincts to lead. |
| Green Endowed Medical Scholarship Established by Hazel Green Young, CHM ’79, the scholarship supports an entering student to the College who has unmet financial need and increases the cultural diversity of the CHM student body. |
Joan Hooper Endowed Scholarship Established to honor the exemplary service of Joan Hooper to CHM's Upper Peninsula program, this scholarship is awarded to a fourth-year CHM student enrolled in the college's Upper Peninsula program. |
| Rita L. Hopkinson Endowed Memorial Scholarship Dr. John and Mrs. Robin Kisala established this scholarship in memory of their friend Rita Hopkinson in order to support a CHM student interested in pursuing a career in Family Practice, Pediatrics, or Obstetrics. The donors were particularly interested in helping students with a commitment to volunteer service and who have overcome financial hardship to attend medical school |
| The Clifford L. House, M.D., Endowed Memorial Scholarship Established by Mrs. E. Ann House in memory of her husband, this memorial scholarship encourages and assists financially deserving students who are Michigan residents and originate from a rural community. Special consideration is given to students from Lapeer, Tuscola, or Huron counties. |
| Ingham County Medical Society Alliance Scholarship Fund Preference for this fund shall be given to students who have graduated from a high school in Ingham, Clinton, or Eaton counties. |
| Ingham County Medical Society Clinical Excellence Award This award is given to a fourth-year CHM student who has graduated from a high school in the mid-Michigan area and who has demonstrated excellence in clinical evaluation. |
| Jackson County Medical Society Auxiliary Scholarship This fund is intended for students who currently live or have their primary residence in Jackson County, Michigan. |
| Anne Murphy Janca Endowed Scholarship Fund Established in memory of Ann Murphy Janca, M.D., CHM ’90, by her family, friends, and classmates, this fund supports a renewable admission scholarship for a student from Michigan with demonstrated financial need. |
| Norman Kagan Endowed Scholarship in Graduate and Professional Studies Established by Steven Kagan in memory and honor of his father, who was a professor in MSU’s College of Education, this award is intended to honor and encourage graduate and professional students in the research of interpersonal relations, particularly therapeutic relationships such as health provider/patient and counselor/client relations. Students enrolled in the Colleges of Human Medicine, Education, Osteopathic Medicine, Nursing, and Social Science are eligible. |
Amir Alborzy-Khaghany Memorial Endowed Scholarship Established in memory of Amir Khaghany, a third-year CHM student who died tragically in 1989, this scholarship supports a student with demonstrated financial need who is assigned to either perform undergraduate clinical training at the CHM Kalamazoo campus or residence in the Kalamazoo community or greater Kalamazoo medical service area. |
| Khaghany Family Endowed Scholarship Established by the Dr. Michael and Mrs. Rose Khaghany family to honor several members of the family who have dedicated their lives to the practice of medicine, this fund is intended for first-year students whose presence promotes cultural diversity on campus. Preference is given to Michigan residents who have demonstrated leadership skills, financial need, and an expressed interest in becoming a primary care physician |
| Olaf Kroneman III, M.D. and Family Scholarship This expendable scholarship funded by Olaf Kroneman, CHM ’77, and his wife, Mary, MSU ’73, supports CHM students beyond their first year who are in good academic standing and have an undergraduate degree from MSU. |
Paul C. Linnell, M.D. Scholarship Established by friends and colleagues of Dr. Linnell on the occasion of his retirement, this scholarship is awarded to third- or fourth-year students assigned to the Lansing community campus or who are residents of mid-Michigan. Special consideration will be given to well-rounded students who not only have a solid academic background but also demonstrate strength in other areas such as leadership skills, community service, volunteerism, or participation in sports or other hobbies. |
| Professor Leonard J. Luker Memorial Fund AR0011 Established by the widow of Professor Leonard Luker, this memorial scholarship grants preference to students involved in biological research related to diseases of the aging. |

The Michigan Association of Physicians from India is an organization of physicians of Indian heritage in the state of Michigan who advocate educational, scientific, cultural, social, and charitable causes. This scholarship is intended for students entering their second, third, or fourth year of medical school who are in good academic standing. |
Mid-Michigan Society Foundation Scholarship for African-American Students Established by a group of African-American physicians in the Lansing area, this scholarship is intended to increase diversity within both the College of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Student recipients shall demonstrate excellence, leadership and responsibility to medicine and the African-American community that will serve as an enviable model for other students to emulate. |
| Monika and Manoj Mohan Scholarship This expendable scholarship supports a third-year medical student who comes from a background characterized by significant financial hardship. |
| Florence Gravelle Oberg Endowed Memorial Scholarship Established by MSU alumnus Roger Oberg, the father of Cathy Oberg Blight, CHM ’77, in memory of his wife, this scholarship is available to students who are residents of Oakland or Genesee County, or who have been assigned to the CHM Flint community campus for their clinical training. Special consideration is given to students who have previously received an undergraduate or master’s degree from Michigan State University. |
| Michael J. Ptasnik, M.D., and Family Scholarship This expendable scholarship, funded by Michael Ptasnik, CHM ’75, supports a student who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership qualities, and significant financial need. |
| The Reitmeyer Family and Bernadine M. Reitmeyer Memorial Scholarship Established in memory of the late wife of William Reitmeyer, CHM ’75, this scholarship supports students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service and volunteerism as well as financial need. |
Sue Rex Award of Merit Established in honor of Sue Rex, the former director of CHM Alumni Relations, this award is presented to a student who has completed his/her third year. The award recognizes outstanding achievements, leadership and humanitarian contributions. |

| Sinai Medical Staff Foundation Endowed Scholarship in the College of Human Medicine This scholarship supports a student for all four years of medical school who exemplifies academic excellence and financial need. The recipient must have received elementary, secondary, and undergraduate education from schools within the United States of America. |
Carlos R. Sledge, M.D., Ph.D., Endowed Memorial Scholarship Established by faculty, friends and alumni of CHM in memory of Dr. Sledge, CHM '77, who died of heart failure on October 2, 1996. This fund is intended for second-, third-, or fourth-year students whose presence at CHM promotes diversity. Preference also is given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service, particularly through programs that serve disadvantaged, underserved populations. |
| Woodrow W. and Mary B. Smith Award for Excellence in Medicine AR0080 This expendable award is given to a fourth-year woman medical student, preferably one who has delayed entry into medical school. |
| Bernard H. Smookler, M.D., Endowed Fund Established by friends and family in memory of Bernard Smookler, this fund is intended for students who demonstrate high standards of academic excellence and financial need. |
| Steensma Family Endowed Scholarship Established by Kristine Steensma, CHM ’77, this fund honors Dr. Steensma’s parents and siblings. Scholarship preference is granted to first-year women students who have postponed entry into medical school for a minimum of two years after completing their undergraduate degree, and who can demonstrate how their postponement has provided “real world” experiences that better equip them for a career in medicine. |
Student Medical Education Enrichment Fund (SMEEF) SMEEF is a nonscholarship, enrichment fund for projects organized by CHM students. Projects are vetted and chosen for funding by CHM students, subject to final approval by the college's Alumni Board. |
| Robert K. Richards, Ph.D., Endowed Scholarship Award of Excellence This fund created by faculty, staff, alumni, volunteer faculty, and friends from the Grand Rapids community in honor of Dr. Robert Richards on the occasion of his retirement as assistant dean and executive vice president of the Grand Rapids Area Medical Education Consortium (GRAMEC). The award, designated for medical students who are assigned to the Grand Rapids campus during their clinical years, will benefit a graduating senior who has been chosen as the outstanding fourth-year student by the assistant dean, community administrator, and clerkship coordinators. The student must demonstrate the highest standards of academic excellence as well as the highest ethical and moral standards of the profession. |
| Dr. David S. and Elaine O. Trump College of Human Medicine Department of Surgery Scholarship Established by Dr. and Mrs. Trump to recognize fourth-year students who demonstrate strong clinical performance, leadership, and overall excellence, this scholarship is intended for students strongly committed to pursuing a career in general surgery or the surgical subspecialties. Special consideration is given to students who have been involved with research and/or who have research interests within the field of surgery |
| Walter Turke, M.D., Scholarship Established by Walter Turke, a clinical professor in CHM’s Department of Psychiatry and psychiatry clerkship coordinator for CHM’s Saginaw campus, this scholarship is intended for third- or fourth-year students who intend to elect psychiatry as their chosen specialty. Special consideration is given to students whose personal origins are from an underrepresented segment of the overall MSU-CHM student population. |
| William B. Weil, Jr., M.D., Scholarship This scholarship was established by an anonymous CHM alumnus who wished to honor Dr. Weil on the occasion of his retirement from CHM. Preference is given to financially deserving students who have an expressed interest in becoming a primary care physician and have made a significant contribution to infant/child care or development as evidenced through volunteerism or professional experiences. |
| Paul T. Werner, M.D., Family Endowed Scholarship Established by the family of Paul Werner, CHM ‘73, this scholarship is intended for students who, in good faith, intend to elect family practice as their chosen specialty and to practice in a rural or inner-city underserved area. Preference also shall be given to students whose personal origins are from an underrepresented segment of the overall MSU-CHM student population. |
W. Donald Weston Award Established in honor of the college's second dean, Dr. W. Donald Weston, this award is given annually to a second- and a fourth-year underrepresented minority medical student who demonstrates outstanding leadership, academic excellence and responsibility to medical education. |
Women in Medicine Scholarship Established by the Women's Advisory Committee to the dean of the College of Human Medicine, this fund is designed to provide tuition support to promising women medical students who demonstrate exemplary leadership qualities, academic excellence and unmet financial need. It has proven to be a particularly attractive gift option to many alumni. |
| The Wright Family Endowed Scholarship Established by Mrs. Ruth Wright in honor of her four children, this scholarship was created to support medical students who have a demonstrated interest in psychiatry, aging, and/or the neurosciences |
| Wilbur C. Wright Memorial Fund Established by Ruth Wright in loving memory of her husband, this fund provides three awards annually to students who demonstrate academic excellence and show an expressed interest in cancer research. The fund’s primary purpose is to allow for additional research in the prevention of cancer |
